Which Type of Motorcycle Helmets Are Right For You?

Just like the different brands and models of bikes, motorcycle helmets come in all shapes and sizes. It doesn't matter if you ride on dirt, street, race, or all of the above; there is a helmet out there with your name on it. The question is what type of helmet is right for you? Well, my friends lets dive in and find out, shall we?
Full Face Helmets
Full face motorcycle helmets are by far the most common type of helmet. The reason being is that they can be used for almost any type of riding. There mainly designed for street or race use, but I've seen plenty of bikers sporting these at the dirt tracks, or even at the dunes. Although all helmets are safe, full face helmets offer that extra barrier of safety by encompassing your whole head inside the shell of the helmet itself. You essentially have a full 360 degrees of protection, so no matter how you fall, you noggin will be safe.
The only downside to full face lids, is that they can get quite fogged up, as air doesn't always circulate thoroughly. Many brands have helped to solve this problem by adding external vents on the top of the helmet. Some even offer anti-fog shields, which come in handy on those brisk morning rides.
Modular / Flip-Up Helmets
Modular helmets are the best of both worlds. They combine the safety and sleekness of full face, with the openness of open face helmets. Flip-Up helmets offer a lot of amazing features as well. Most offer interlocking mechanisms, so that you can adjust the face of the helmet at varying heights according to your preference. Some even offer a dual visor option, so you can flip down a tinted visor to shield your eyes from the sun. Modular lids can be utilized in all the same applications as street.
Open Face Helmets
Open face motorcycle helmets give you true freedom to enjoy the open road. Open helmets are mainly used on cruisers and touring bikes, and offer as much protection as full face does. It's recommended to use a pair of goggles, or sunglasses when wearing these, because they offer no frontal protection.
Half Helmets
Half helmets, or brain buckets as some call them, are exactly that, they only protect the top of your head. Usually only hard core Harley or Chopper bikers wear these, as they give you just enough protection to justify your safety, but still give you that intimidating look that bikers love oh so much.
Motocross / Dirt Helmets
Motocross helmets are strictly for off road riding. They offer features that are simply made to protect you off-road, such as visors, and extended mouth guards with upgraded air filters, to block out the dust. They also have an opening in front that will fit most if not all dirt goggles.
Hopefully this article helps you decide which type of motorcycle helmet is right for you, based on your bike and riding style. The important thing to remember is to make sure that your helmet passes D.O.T. (Department of Transportation) and ECE 22.05 (U.N. Economic Commission for Europe) safety standards. Safe riding!
