9 Tips to Get Your Motorcycle Ready to Ride

If you're like me, you've noticed the increasing number of motorcycles breaking out for a quick ride. With warming temperatures and yearning riders, it's time to get your bike ready for the road. Here are nine tips to help you stay 'sunny-side up' and help protect you and the health of your motorcycle.
1. Charge your battery
The heart of your bike's electrical system and the source of power to get-up and goin' is your motorcycle battery. The prudent already have their battery on some form of trickle charger. [Tip: keeping your battery charged can add multiple lives to your energy cell.] But if you don't have your battery on a charger, the first thing to make your motorcycle ride-ready is to charge your battery.
2. Change the oil & filter
If you followed our recommendations for winterizing your bike, you changed the oil before putting it in storage for the year - but if not, now's the time to do it. Swap that stale lubricant for fresh clean oil and a new filter. If you don't do the work on your bike, make arrangements with your favorite motorcycle maintenance facility to accomplish this important task.
3. Tires
These jewels are where the 'rubber meets the road' literally, so pay special attention to them. Do a full 360 degree check on each tire for any cracking or punctures. Also, check for wear. Excessively worn tires are more easily punctured and less likely to maintain proper traction. On many tires, tread wear indicator bars signal a need for replacement, but another easy check - if you can see the top of Lincoln's head on a penny when inserted in the tire tread, Lincoln's head facing down, it's time for a new tire. If your tires pass the wear test, inflate them to manufacturer's inflation specs and your rubber is ready to go.
4. Fuel
If you stabilized the fuel in your motorcycle during the winterization process, you should burn through it or siphon it out and replace it with fresh fuel. If you didn't winterize, and also didn't fill the tank before storing, check the fuel tank for rust, which may have formed due to water condensation. If the tank is clean, fill it and 'ride-on'. If there are signs of rust, you'll live with the consequences - fouled carburetor, clogged fuel filter, etc. - until you replace the tank.
5. Cables & Pivot points
A Spring tune up of cables and pivot points is time well spent. One product you should consider for this task is Bel Ray 6-in-1 spray lubricant. Use it on anything that pivots or slides - cables, levers, pedals, kick-stand, etc. Exclusions to its use are chains and drive assemblies. We recommend using chain and driveline lubricants specifically designed for this task. Check with your motorcycle manufacturer for recommended products. Bel Ray is also not recommended for 'fogging' fuel tanks and combustion cylinders. Use fogging oil designed specifically for this purpose as part of your winterization at the end of the riding year.
6. Lighting
Turn on your motorcycle's power and check all the lights for any that have inoperative bulbs and replace them i.e. brake lights, turn signals, headlights, etc. Often, replacement bulbs come in twos, so save extras for the next time you need one. Occasionally, an outage may be due to a fuse failure. Replace the spent fuse, but monitor the outage situation - there may be more awry than a burned-out bulb. Repetitive fuse failures can signal a deeper electrical problem, which may require professional help.
7. Brakes
Stopping your motorcycle safely is just as important as insuring your bike can accelerate. Before you hit the road, thoroughly check all the components of your brake system - lever adjustment, cables, calipers, brake pads, etc. Review your motorcycle's manufacturer's manual for tips on proper brake system adjustment. If settings don't seem right and you're not comfortable making adjustments, seek professional help. It's always better to be safe than sorry.
8. Fluids
Check for all the motorcycle's fluid levels - brake, clutch, oil, coolant. Top them off as needed. Look for any leaks on the floor where your motorcycle's been stored. Another way to check for leaks is to start and warm your bike up to running temperature, then turn it off and check for leaks.
9. Clean

Paddock stands are the basic of all the bike stands yet some finds the contraption a bit tricky to work with. It requires one to be capable of doing two things at once i.e. keeping the bike upright as one slips the stand from the rear. Good thing there are good alternatives to paddock stands. One can choose from motorcycle jack or lift for sale or one may opt to build motorcycle stands from scratch.
Building Materials
If building a homemade motorcycle stand captures your fancy, then go ahead and do it. This garage project is easy and very doable. The basic stuffs needed are pipe bending tools and a welder. For the stand's structure, the best material to use is a 2-inch heavy gauge steel pipe. This metal is fairly sturdy with high malleability. If that's unavailable, a 2-inch channel bar will do. It is a square steel pipe mostly used to build shelves and gates. One will have to struggle a bit with this material as it requires more heat and more muscle strength to bend it. There are also designs that make use of cylindrical pipes and channel bars. One can also build a ramp or a stand using 2x6 wood boards.
Design
There are so many designs available on motorcycle jacks. One design for example can even support a ton load. It has a 3-feet rod handle bent at a diagonal against the surface and rises up from the center. The device is connected to a crossbar with stubby legs that will fit your bike from a slightly angled position. The crossbar is positioned underneath the bike parallel to the ground and when the handle is lifted, the crossbar slides forward lifting the bike up.
Another design resembles a V which is fixed onto a plate with a pivot bar. It is easy to use. One only needs to position the bike on the V figure. When the bike is pushed forward, the V locks into an upright position.
Fabrication
During the actual building process make sure that you are well-armed with metal bending tools.
First thing to do is mark the center of the bar then place the pipe into the bender so that the mark is centered. To bend the pipe, use a blow torch or a heat gun. For thicker bars or channel pipes, longer heating is required. The corners of channel bars however may bunch together which may make it weak. After bending, weld the corners of the bars with MIG or TIG to regain its strength. This skill requires practice. If one has no experience in welding, best advice is to learn welding first before doing any of the previously mentioned steps.
Optional Accessory
Since motorcycle stands are constantly under wear and tear, rubber caps on handle bars and legs help minimize the effects. Paints on the stand do not only add color but with an application of primer and an automotive paint prevents rusting.

The History of the Suzuki125 Motorcycl


The Suzuki AN 125 is often confused with the Suzuki Burgman series of super-scooters. However, the AN 125 is actually an older model, first manufactured in 1995. Production continued until 1999, with no major variants or special models. Currently, there is a similar Burgman model in production called the Suzuki UH125, which is also given the AN 125 designation.
The 90s production Suzuki AN 125 was powered by an air-cooled 124cc four-stroke engine. A simple, straightforward single cylinder design, it gave this scooter a pretty good 10 hp at 8000 rpm. This gave rise to some interesting numbers, such as a reported 0-60 mph time of under 16 seconds! With a kerb weight of 100 kgs, the AN 125 felt like a much bigger ride than similar 100cc mopeds and scooters. However, the 10 inch wheels kept bikers firmly grounded in reality. Braking was quite positive and a move up from earlier Suzuki scooters.
In real driving conditions, the Suzuki engine proved to be a winner, consistently drinking a lot less petrol than its competitors. The automatic transmission simplified control of the vehicle with just one throttle and two brakes required. This allowed younger riders or later learners a great chance to pick up basic rising skills. However, in the design department the AN 125 was definitely part of the pack. It looked like most of the scooter designs from that time; with European styling and bare frills. Storage was limited to a small dashboard in front and a helmet-sized storage area under the seat.
Riders of the Suzuki AN 125 did get a decent instrument panel, with all the key displays and warning LEDs clearly visible. The speedometer was graded up to 110 kmph, though most owners never experienced speeds over 80 mph. Even today, you may never see an AN 125 cruising down the motorway, but you're sure to spot one around town or at the market.

The motorcycle industry can be weird from at times. What's hot today may be tomorrow's trash. It's constantly changing, and morphing into different genres and styles constantly. No wonder why so many companies have tried to make a name for themselves and failed miserably. There is one company, no more like one man that has built up a reputation of being what the motorcycle industry is all about. He has been around for almost 5 decades and only continuous to dominate the market. Who is this mythical legend some consider to be a biker god? Arlen Ness!
That's right, Arlen has been a dominating force in the cruiser industry since the 60's. His company has produced some of the most tricked out bikes you or I have ever been lucky enough to lay our eyes on. They also manufacture some of the highest quality parts around, that will set your bike apart from the rest. So how exactly did Arlen go from being an unknown contractor with a passion for bikes, to becoming the most recognized name in the motorcycle industry?
The Beginning
To start let's take a trip back in time to when gas was cheap, the nation was at war, hippies were running amuck, and the good times were about to roll...1967. A young Arlen Ness brings home his first bike, a beautiful 1947 Knucklehead. Now most people would be happy with just being in the same room as one of these, but not Arlen, he wanted custom. He stripped it down and gave it a full custom paint job, and the icing on the cake he took home first prize in his first custom bike show, just one of many. He spent many of nights customizing bikes for a growing customer base, and finally got busy enough he quit his job and went into it full time.
The Revolution Begins
Soon after going into business for himself, Ness opened his first parts store in San Leandro, CA. He worked it part time at nights so he could build bikes during the day, but that didn't last long. Soon word got out about the "Ness-ecities", and it spread like wildfire. Arlen opened the store full time and brought his sons in to help him run it.
Today
Today Arlen Ness is the name to have on your bike, whether it's a custom Ness special or you have a custom set of Ness pipes on your bike. Every year the Ness family releases a limited edition fleet of bikes. The most recent is the 2012 Victory Cory Ness' Limited Ed. Cross Country bike. They also design and build their own line of bikes which include the Speedliner, Highliner, and the Lowliner.
The Ness family also puts out a line of custom parts for many brands of bikes. They have won many awards for their stylish wheel designs, powerful exhaust systems, chromed out mirrors, and so on. Anything you need to really set your bike apart from the rest.
So what is the real reason that Arlen Ness is the premier brand in the motorcycle industry? It's simple, it's Arlen's refusal to imitate others, his sense of style and his willingness to take risks is still seen today in his slogan of, "Always innovate, never imitate." Safe Riding!
